Safety First — Be Aware of the Summer Heat

At Southland safety comes first; especially when it comes to the summer heat. When working outside all day, it is important to stay informed and protected from the risks that come along with extreme heat. Working in the heat without proper precautions can cause heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and dehydration. It can also cause fatigue and loss of focus, which can both increase the risks of injury and long-term health issues.

Early Signs of Heat Related illnesses

  • Heat Exhaustion
  • Heat Stroke (Call 911!)
  • Heavy sweating
  • Hot, dry skin or stopped sweating
  • Weakness, dizziness
  • Confusion, seizures, loss of consciousness
  • Headache, nausea
  • Rapid pulse, difficulty breathing

Do not hesitate to take action if you experience any of these symptoms. It is critical to speak up because early action can make all the difference.

How to Stay Hydrated

One of the easiest ways to avoid heat exhaustion and other risks is to stay hydrated. Not all drinks keep you hydrated. Drinks like energy drinks, soda, alcohol and sugary juices all can lead to dehydration due to high caffeine and sugar.

It is important to drink WATER every 15-20 minutes. Other drinks that can keep you hydrated are electrolyte drinks which replace lost salt, potassium, and magnesium. Coconut water because it has low sugar and contains natural electrolytes. Lastly, diluted fruit juice, which has light sugars and vitamins when mixed in a 1:1 ratio.

Fueling Your Body

The right liquids are not the only fuel that keeps your body hydrated. There are many foods that keep you hydrated and healthy as well. Water-rich fruits and vegetables like watermelon, oranges, grapes, celery and cucumbers are all perfect snacks for the job site. Proteins such as eggs, chicken, or yogurt fuel your body but are not too heavy. Even salty broths or soups can replenish your hydration and provide long lasting energy.

Southland prioritizes safety especially when it comes to heat safety in the summer. We strive to provide a safe workplace for the employees and staying hydrated is the employees’ part of keeping the jobsites safe—It is a responsibility we all share. Remember to take breaks, find shaded or cool areas, and wear light colored breathable clothing to keep refreshed in the summer heat.
