The McClugage Bridge Replacement – A Monument to Modern Engineering

The McClugage Bridge Replacement – A Monument to Modern Engineering 1024 768 Southland Holdings

Peoria’s iconic McClugage Bridge has long served as a vital connection across the Illinois River. After decades of use, it was time for a bold transformation—one that would honor its legacy while propelling the region into the future. The result? A nearly mile-long marvel of engineering that blends innovation, safety, and community impact.

A Feat of Innovation

At the heart of this project lies a daring engineering achievement: the use of floating construction to hoist and place the bridge’s signature 6-million-pound tied arch span. This cutting-edge technique sped up construction while dramatically improving safety by allowing much of the work to be done away from traffic and river navigation.

More Than Just a Bridge

This isn’t just about steel and concrete. The McClugage Bridge Replacement is about connection—between cities, people, and opportunity. Two lanes of the new eastbound span opened to traffic in December 2024, giving commuters a safer, smoother ride and unlocking a new chapter for regional growth.

Engineering by the Numbers

  • Bridge Length: Nearly 1 mile long
  • Main Span: 4,750 feet
  • Steel Used: Over 7,850 tons, with 3,000 in the arch alone
  • Concrete Placed: More than 50,000 cubic yards
  • Peak Workforce: Over 120 workers across five trades
  • Ramp Span: 360 feet

The construction also required a custom-built trestle to work around the river’s unpredictable depths and strong currents—all while maintaining traffic flow.

Prioritizing Safety and Quality

From day one, safety was non-negotiable. With rigorous communication protocols and strict adherence to safety procedures, the project minimized incidents while maintaining high productivity. Every inch of the bridge was quality-checked, with third-party inspections validating every major component from deck concrete to rebar placement.

Legacy in the Making

With added pedestrian and bike pathways, improved traffic flow, and a striking architectural profile, the McClugage Bridge does more than connect—it inspires. It stands as a symbol of collaboration, resilience, and engineering excellence, made possible by the collective strength of contractors, local trades, and the Peoria community.

“Building from foundation to finish gives a profound appreciation for every phase, teaching us not only what to build, but how to build it right.”
Patrick Ryan, Project Manager

Did You Know?

  • Every day, the McClugage Bridge carries over 20,000 vehicles.
  • Beneath it, commercial and recreational vessels travel the Illinois River.
  • The original structure was constructed in 1948—this replacement ensures the corridor’s future for generations to come.

From foundation to final pour, the McClugage Bridge Replacement is more than a project—it’s a landmark in progress, performance, and purpose.
