Completed in 2008 by American Bridge, the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Bascule Spans project involved constructing the main three spans of a new 35-span bridge. This included a 270′ trunnion bascule main span and 144.5′ flanking spans, with a 12-lane wide superstructure made of steel plate girders, floor beams, and a lightweight concrete deck. The bascule girders, each 204′ long and weighing 450,000 pounds, were installed with 600-ton picks. The project also included fabricating and installing operating machinery, including motors, reducers, trunnions, and electrical controls. Foundations were installed under a separate contract, and 40,000 cubic yards of concrete were used.
