Wheeling Bridge Rehabilitation

Completed in 1999 by American Bridge, the Wheeling Bridge Rehabilitation project involved restoring the 1849-era suspension bridge, the oldest in the U.S. and once the world’s largest. Work included removing neoprene wrap from four main cables, wedging and treating cables with a corrosion inhibitor, repairing broken wires, rewrapping cables with galvanized wire, painting cables, replacing cracked cable bands, hanger rods, and stay cables, re-tensioning the suspension system, repainting the bridge, and replacing the steel grid deck. American Bridge handled all structural, concrete, and cable work, and manufactured the new deck.
