Vehicle Assembly Building

Completed in 1965 by American Bridge, the Vehicle Assembly Building project consisted of fabricating and erecting a 60,000-ton building for the final assembly of manned spacecraft. The building measures 716′ x 518′ x 525′ high and contains 129 million cubic feet of volume, making it one of the largest buildings in the world. The Vehicle Assembly Building has two distinct areas: a low bay area approximately 210 feet high, housing administrative and service facilities, and a high bay area where rockets are assembled in upright positions. The high bay features extensible work platforms, which are essentially buildings within the building, able to enclose the rocket stages during assembly and provide space for checkout purposes. American Bridge self-performed the structural steel work.
