Completed in 2003 by Mole Constructors, the Van Aken Boulevard Intercommunity Relief Sewer Project consisted of the excavation of approximately 8,667 linear feet of 8 ft 9-inch diameter tunnel for a sanitary sewer through shale including shaft excavations to depths of 150 vertical feet. Tunnel excavation performed via a Dosco Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) for the tunnel. The initial support consisted of steel ribs and wood lagging. The final lining consisted of 66-inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe. The shafts were supported via liner plates within soft ground, and rock dowels, welded wire fabric and shotcrete within rock. Tangential approach flow, baffle-type flow and standard drop structures were constructed within the shafts.
