U.S. Air Force Academy Dining Hall

Completed in 1958 by American Bridge, the U.S. Air Force Academy Dining Hall project consisted of the fabrication and erection of Mitchell Hall, a cadet dining facility featuring a 1,150-ton roofing system supported by 16 columns with a 266-foot span. Including its overhang, the roof measured 308 feet square and was assembled on the dining hall floor slab using 12-foot-deep welded trusses, then raised into place using the concrete lift slab method—reportedly the first use of this method on such a large steel structure. The total structural steel weight was 1,443 tons.
