Completed in 1955 by American Bridge, the Texas Illinois Gas Pipeline Bridge project consisted of constructing a suspension bridge over the Mississippi River to carry two natural gas pipelines. The bridge featured a 2,150′ (655m) mainspan, 246′ (75m) high towers with 145′ (44m) outrigger trusses for wind cables, and a single main cable made from 24 strands of 2″ (51mm) wire rope. Two 2-3/8″ (60mm) wind cables and inclined suspender ropes supported a superstructure of transverse floorbeams. American Bridge also welded and installed the two 30″ (762mm) diameter gas pipelines furnished by the customer.
