Completed in 1955 by American Bridge, the Tappan Zee Bridge project consisted of serving as the prime superstructure contractor for the 7,300′ (2,225m) deep-water portion of the 16,000′ (4,900m) Hudson River crossing north of New York City. The three-span channel unit included a 2,415′ (736m) cantilevered truss with a 1,212′ (370m) mainspan, erected by cantilevering from both ends after placing anchor spans on falsework. Twenty deck truss approach spans, each 250′ x 64′ x 26′ (76m x 20m x 8m) and weighing 830 tons (753mt), were assembled on land and floated into position.
