Completed in 1998 by American Bridge, the Tagus River Bridge Rail Deck project upgraded a 10,574′ river crossing, including a 6,496′ suspension bridge, to support a regional commuter rail system and increased vehicular capacity. The project involved adding a rail deck on the bottom chord, widening the roadway, reinforcing cable bents, extending towers, and installing new main cables and additional hanger ropes. The work included constructing rail deck stringers, installing railroad tracks, and transferring additional load to the new cables. The bridge remained operational during construction, with only two one-hour closures.
