Completed in 1954 by American Bridge, the Sunshine Skyway (1st Cantilevered Truss) project involved fabricating and erecting a 5,621 long, 31-span bridge, including deck girder spans, deck truss spans, and a three-span cantilevered through truss. The bridge was demolished after being struck by a freighter in 1980 and replaced by a cable-stay bridge in 1987.
