Straits of Mackinac Bridge Traveler Replacement

Completed in 2001 by American Bridge, the Straits of Mackinac Bridge Traveler Replacement project involved replacing the inspection traveler vehicles and 7,400′ of railway system on this 21,000′ bridge. Work included removing six traveler vehicles, replacing 14,800′ of traveler rail in the suspended spans, and installing eight new self-propelled electric inspection vehicles. The new system featured advanced electric and hydraulic drive mechanisms with tight deflection and tolerance controls. American Bridge was the general contractor and handled rail fabrication and vehicle erection.
