St. Johns (Suspension) Bridge Approach Spans

Completed in 1930 by American Bridge, the St. Johns Bridge Approach Spans project consisted of ten deck truss spans totaling 1,440′, with nine spans on the east (1,260′) and one on the west (180′). The spans were 3 x 108′, 4 x 144′, and 3 x 180′. Fabrication of the 144′ spans (740 tons) was sublet to Poole and McGonigle, with the remaining 1,203 tons built at American Bridge’s Elmira shops. Erection used a Jinniwink deck traveler, with a cableway for moving falsework bents. Erection started at Pier 1 on July 1, 1930, and was completed at Pier 10 on November 17, 1930; the west span between piers 13 & 14 was finished on December 30, 1930.
