Completed in 2023 by American Bridge, the SR 679 Pinellas Bayway Bridge Structure E project involved designing and building a new two-lane fixed span bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway, replacing the old bascule bridge. The project improves a key hurricane evacuation route and provides uninterrupted access for vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and marine traffic. It includes a 12-foot-wide shared use path, a 5-foot sidewalk, milling and resurfacing of SR 679, new LED lighting, retaining walls, and the replacement of the Tierra Verde and Boca Ciega seawalls. The existing bascule bridge was demolished as part of the project.
