Completed in 1950 by American Bridge, the South Capitol Street Swing Bridge project consisted of a highway bridge with two 24-foot roadways, a 4-foot center strip, and two 6-foot sidewalks. The structure included a 1,156-foot approach on the Washington, D.C. side, a 386-foot deck plate girder swing span, and cantilevered deck plate approach spans.
