Completed in 1985 by American Bridge, the P&PU Railway Illinois River Bridge project involved replacing a single-leaf, Strauss-type bascule bridge with a vertical lift bridge for the Peoria & Pekin Union Railway. The work was completed with just a three-day shutdown for marine and rail traffic. The new bridge was built on the same alignment using the existing approach spans, with towers straddling the track at both ends. The lift span was assembled on a barge and floated into position. American Bridge handled steel erection, machinery installation, alignment, and demolition, while subcontractors managed pier construction, electrical work, and painting.
