Platt Street over Hillsborough River Bridge Rehabilitation

Completed in 2012 by American Bridge, the Platt Street Bridge Major Repairs project involved replacing the bascule lifting mechanism, control equipment, and upgrading electrical systems. Work included demolishing and replacing the 8′ cantilevered sidewalk, upgrading the original structure’s reinforcing, and replacing the ornamental concrete handrail to match the bridge’s historic look. The 86-year-old drive train was replaced with a closed gearbox system, and all electrical components were updated. Additional work included replacing the metal grid deck, repairing structural steel, refurbishing tender houses, and resurfacing the approach deck with concrete.
