Paradise Whitney Interceptor Phase 3

Completed in 2017 by Southland Contracting, the Paradise Whitney Interceptor Phase 3 Project consisted of installation of approximately 23,300 linear feet of 36-inch to 60-inch FRP sewer mainline and 15,420 linear feet of 12-inch to 27-inch smaller pipelines along major roads. The scope of work also included microtunnels approximately 30-50 feet below the surface and below the groundwater table, paving and site restoration along numerous roads and neighborhoods, installation of new manholes ranging in size from 48-inch to 72-inch in diameter, utility relocations, and abandonment or removal of existing sewers and manholes. Most of the work was constructed along busy streets and near residential and school areas. Some of the major roadways required extensive traffic control and coordination with businesses and residents. The pipeline was constructed using a combination of open cut and trenchless methods. The project encountered numerous design challenges including complicated geology, close proximity to sensitive underground utilities, limited surface access, and other factors forcing trenchless drive lengths up to 1,500 linear feet. Some project considerations contributed to an increase in trenchless construction by more than 230% (originally about 5,757 linear feet).
