Completed in 1994 by American Bridge, the Norfolk Southern railway bridge relocation project involved removing a 409-foot, 1,500-ton vertical lift span from Florence, AL, and relocating it to Hannibal, MO. The truss was reassembled on barges and falsework. During a three-day outage, the existing swing span was replaced, widening the navigation clearance by several hundred feet. The project also included installing new operating machinery and electrical systems.
