Completed in 1998 by American Bridge, the Ninth Street Bridge project involved fabricating and erecting a high-quality vertical lift bridge to replace a bascule structure. The 80′ long, 47′ wide lift span provides 82′ vertical clearance. The bridge was constructed beneath an active New York City Transit rail line with columns fitted with jacking devices for settlement adjustments. American Bridge designed a cantilevered gantry for erecting 24-ton sheaves and installed synchronized electric motors with redundant systems for operation. The bridge was erected in the up position to allow continued navigation during construction.
