Newtown Interceptor – Contract A

Completed in 1980 by Mole Constructors, the Newton Interceptor – Contract A project involved excavating approximately 10,000 linear feet of 106-inch tunnel using a 106-inch Lovat Tunnel Boring Machine. The tunnel accommodated 72-inch reinforced concrete pipe and was excavated through glacial moraine sands, gravel, and silts at depths ranging from 50 feet to 60 feet below the water table. The project included compaction grouting, chemical grouting for consolidation, and annulus backfill grouting with molecrete. Notably, successful measures were implemented to prevent the settlement of a 24-inch diameter high-pressure natural gas main directly over the center line of the tunnel excavation.
