Completed in 1977 by American Bridge, the New River Gorge Bridge project involved temporary works engineering for a 3,030′ (924m) two-hinged deck arch bridge. With a 1,700′ (518m) span, it remains the world’s longest deck arch bridge. The structure rises 900′ (274m) above the river, with a 370′ (113m) arch rise. American Bridge fabricated the weathering steel and developed innovative construction methods, including a four-tower dual cableway crane system spanning 3,500′ (1,067m) and a deck-level tieback system to stabilize the arch. The bridge contains 10,533 tons (9,555mt) of arch steel and 11,470 tons (10,496mt) in the superstructure.
