Macombs Dam Bridge

Completed in 2004 by American Bridge, the Macombs Dam Bridge project consisted of a 52-span structure featuring five major structural types. From west to east, the project included the 35-span, 482m west approach viaduct (155th Street Viaduct) over Manhattan; a two-span, 125m swingspan over the Harlem River; two 30m deck truss spans over the Bronx bank; a 67m camelback truss span over a four-track rail corridor; a six-span, 75m overpass of the Major Deegan Expressway with four access/exit ramps (east approach); and six additional 30m deck truss spans over the Yankee Stadium parking lot (Jerome Avenue approach). Major construction occurred in three winter stages, with two lanes of traffic maintained during those phases, while all four lanes and pedestrian access remained during four summer stages. To optimize winter work, American Bridge employed innovative techniques such as installing transverse floor joists in the viaduct without removing concrete T’s by cutting the deck fascia and sliding rolled steel shapes between T-webs. Off-season work included lead abatement, wheelbase and machinery replacement, and painting.
