LST 849

Built by American Bridge Company at the Ambridge Manufacturing Plant in Ambridge, PA. Launched December 30, 1944. Commissioned USS LST-849 on January 16, 1945. During World War II, USS LST-849 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Participated in the Okinawa Gunto operation (Assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto, May 26 to June 30, 1945). USS LST-849 earned one battle star for World War II service. Following World War II USS LST-849 was assigned to Occupation service in the Far East from September 9 to 25, 1945. Decommissioned on June 13, 1946. Laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Columbia River Group. Named Johnson County (LST-849) on July 1, 1955. Struck from the Naval Register, and transferred to the Republic of Korea in January 1959, renamed ROKS Wi Pong (LST-812), later redesignated (LST-676). Current Disposition, on display at a military museum in Gunsan, South Korea.
