Built by American Bridge Company at the Ambridge Manufacturing Plant in Ambridge, PA. Launched December 12, 1944. Commissioned USS LST-846 on January 9, 1945. During World War II, USS LST-846 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Participated in the Okinawa Gunto operation (Assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto, May 29 to June 29, 1945). Following World War II USS LST-846 was assigned to Occupation and China service in the Far East for the following periods: September 2 to 11, 1945 (Navy Occupation Service Medal); October 6 to 29, 1945 (Navy Occupation Service Medal); May 9 to 26, 1946 (Navy Occupation Service Medal); July 10 to September 4, 1947 (Navy Occupation Service Medal) September 20 to October 9, 1947 (Navy Occupation Service Medal); November 1 to 8, 1948 (Navy Occupation Service Medal); May 1 to 3, 1949; September 30, 1946 to June 23, 1947 (China Service Medal (extended)); July 10 to September 4, 1947 (China Service Medal (extended)); October 10, 1947 to May 14, 1948 (China Service Medal (extended)); September 29 to October 31, 1948 (China Service Medal (extended)); and November 12, 1948 to April 30, 1949(China Service Medal (extended)). Decommissioned on October 14, 1949, at Astoria, OR. Laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet. Recommissioned, 3 November 1950, LT. Marion V. Reeder in command. During the Korean War USS LST-846 participated in the following campaign: Second Korean Winter (September 9 to 12, 1951 and October 13 to 22, 1951. Named USS Jennings County (LST-846) on July 1, 1955. Decommissioned on December 7, 1955, at San Diego. Laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet. Recommissioned on June 11, 1966, at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, LT L. M. Patella USN in command. During the Vietnam War USS Jennings County (LST-846) served continuously in country and in contiguous waters, with the exception of overhaul periods, from late 1966 to mid 1970 participating in the following campaigns. (Dates listed do not include underway transit times within the contiguous waters along the Vietnam coast as defined by the US Navy and so specified by the Vietnam Service Medal.) Participated in nine campaigns including Vietnamese Counteroffensive – Phase II (November 7 to December 31, 1966 and March 11 to May 31, 1967); Vietnamese Counteroffensive – Phase III (June 1 to August 26, 1967 and October12, 1967 to January 29, 1968); Tet Counteroffensive (January 30 to April 1, 1968); Vietnamese Counteroffensive – Phase IV (April 2 to 14, 1968 and April 26 to June 9, 1968); Tet 69/Counteroffensive (May 1 to June 8, 1969); Vietnam Summer-Fall 1969 (June 9 to September 14, 1969 and October 14 to 31, 1969); Vietnam Winter-Spring 1969 (November 1, 1969 to April 1, 1970); Sanctuary Counteroffensive (June 1 to 30, 1970); and Vietnamese Counteroffensive – Phase VII (June 30 to August 12, 1970). Severely damaged by an on board fire in 1970. Decommissioned and struck from the Naval Register, September 26, 1970, at Naval Station Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines. USS LST-846 earned one battle star for the Korean War and nine campaign stars for Vietnam War service. Sold for service as an ore barge for a mining company. Final Disposition, fate unknown.
