LST 839

Built by American Bridge Company at the Ambridge Manufacturing Plant in Ambridge, PA. Launched November 12, 1944. Commissioned USS LST-839 on December 6, 1944. During World War II, USS LST-839 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Participated in the Okinawa Gunto operation (Assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto, April 13 to June 19, 1945). Following World War II, USS LST-839 was assigned to Occupation service in the Far East from September 6 to 23, 1945. Decommissioned on July 24, 1946, at Vancouver, WA. Laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Astoria, OR. Named Iredell County (LST-839) on July 1, 1955. Recommissioned on June 18, 1966, USS Iredell County (LST-839) at San Diego, CA. During the Vietnam War USS Iredell County (LST-839) served continuously in country and in contiguous waters, with the exception of overhaul periods, from late 1966 to mid 1970 participating in the following campaigns. (Dates listed do not include underway transit times within the contiguous waters along the Vietnam coast as defined by the US Navy and so specified by the Vietnam Service Medal.) During the Vietnam War USS Iredell County (LST-839) participated in the following campaign: Vietnamese Counteroffensive – Phase II (October 20 to December 6, 1966; January 14 to February 28, 1967; and May 6 to May 31, 1967); Vietnamese Counteroffensive – Phase III (June 1 to 9, 1967; July 25 to September 6, 1967; October 26 to November 28, 1967; and January 20 to 29, 1968); Tet Counteroffensive (January 30 to March 22, 1968 and March 20 to April 1, 1968); Vietnamese Counteroffensive – Phase IV (April 2 to 29, 1968); Vietnamese Counteroffensive – Phase VI (December 5, 1068 to January 3, 1969 and January 13 to February 17, 1969); Tet 69/Counteroffensive (March 18 to April 15, 1969 and May 21 to June 8, 1969); Vietnam Summer-Fall 1969 (June 9 to 18, 1969; July 12 to August 2, 1969; August 13 to 18, 1969; September 10 to October 6, 1969; and October 20 to 26, 1969); Vietnam Winter-Spring 1970 (December 3, 1969; December 31, 1969 to March 21, 1970; and April 1 to 30, 1970); and Vietnamese Counteroffensive – Phase VII (May 1 to 2, 1970). Decommissioned on July 15, 1970 and transferred (loaned) under terms of the Security Assistance Program, to Indonesia, renamed KRI Teluk Bone (511). Struck from the Naval Register, and sold outright to Indonesia in February 1979. USS LST-839 earned one battle star for World War II service, and as USS Iredell County (LST-839) the Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation and 9 campaign stars for Vietnam War service. Final Disposition, fate unknown.
