Built by American Bridge Company at the Ambridge Manufacturing Plant in Ambridge, PA. Launched October 29, 1944. Commissioned USS LST-836 on November 25, 1944. During World War II, USS LST-836 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Participated in the Okinawa Gunto operation (Assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto, April 18 to 29, 1945). USS LST-836 earned one battle star for World War II service. Following World War II USS LST-836 was assigned to Occupation duty in the Far East from September 2 to December 15, 1945. Decommissioned on July 25, 1946, at Vancouver, WA. Laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Columbia River Group. Recommissioned on November 3, 1950, at Bremerton, WA. During the Korean War USS LST-836 participated in the following campaigns: Communist China Spring Offensive (June 23, 1951); UN Summer-Fall Offensive (July 14 to August 6, 1951); and Korea, Summer-Fall 1953 (June 2 to 25, 1953 and July 21 to 22 1953). Named USS Holmes County (LST-836) on July 1, 1955. During the Vietnam War USS Holmes County (LST-836) served continuously in country and in contiguous waters, with the exception of overhaul periods, from late 1965 to mid 1971 participating in the following campaigns. (Dates listed do not include underway transit times within the contiguous waters along the Vietnam coast as defined by the US Navy and so specified by the Vietnam Service Medal). Participated in Eleven campaigns including Vietnam Defense (November 21 to December 24, 1965); Vietnamese Counteroffensive (December 25 to January 20, 1966, February 11 to 18, 1966, and March 4 to 31, 1966); Vietnamese Counteroffensive – Phase II (April 17 to 21, 1967); Vietnamese Counteroffensive – Phase III (June 21 to August 18, 1967); Vietnamese Counteroffensive – Phase V (October 21 to November 1, 1968); Vietnamese Counteroffensive – Phase VI (November 2 to 30, 1968, December 20 to 24,1968, and January 22 to February 22, 1969); Tet 69/Counteroffensive (February 23 to 24, 1969 and May 31 to June 8, 1969); Vietnam Summer-Fall 1969 (June 9 to July 19, 1969 and August 12 to September 1, 1969); Vietnam Winter-Spring 1970 (December 10 to 25, 1969 and February 25 to March 4, 1970); Sanctuary Counteroffensive (June 8 to 14, 1970); and Vietnamese Counteroffensive – Phase VII (September 26 to November 26, 1970; January 26 to March 12, 1971; and March 31 to May 10, 1971). Decommissioned on July 1, 1971, and transferred to Singapore and renamed RSN Endurance (L-201). Sold outright the Singapore on December 5, 1975. Struck from the Naval Register, date unknown. USS Holmes County (LST-836) earned one battle star for World War II service and three battle stars for Korean War service and eleven campaign stars for Vietnam War service. Final Disposition, fate unknown.
