LST 762

Built by American Bridge Company at the Ambridge Manufacturing Plant in Ambridge, PA. Launched August 11, 1944. Commissioned USS LST-762 on September 5, 1944. During World War II, USS LST-762 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Participated in the Okinawa Gunto operation (Assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto, April 1 to 14, 1945). Following World War II USS LST-762 was assigned to Occupation service in the Far East from September 29 to November 18, 1945. Decommissioned on July 16, 1946, at Naval Station Tongue Point, Astoria, OR. Laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet Columbia River Group, Astoria, OR. Recommissioned on November 3, 1950, at Naval Station Tongue Point, Astoria, OR., LT William B. Marty USNR in command. During the Korean War USS LST-762 participated in the following campaigns: Second Korean Winter (February 27 to March 29, 1952). USS LST-762 was assigned to China service for the following period February 8 to 12, 1955. Named USS Floyd County (LST-762) on July 1, 1955. During the Vietnam War USS Floyd County (LST-762) participated in the following campaigns: Vietnam Defense (July 5 to 6, 1965 and July 29 to September 17, 1965); Vietnam Counteroffensive (April 9 to June 30, 1966); Vietnam Counteroffensive – Phase II (July 1 to September 3, 1966); Vietnam Counteroffensive – Phase IV (April 23 to June 30, 1968); and Vietnam Counteroffensive – Phase V (July to August 10, 1968, August 26, 1968, and September 1 to 14, 1968). Decommissioned on May 20, 1970. Laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet. Struck from the Naval Register on April 1, 1975 USS LST-762 earned one battle star for World War II service, one battle star for Korean War service, and as USS Floyd County (LST-762) earned five campaign stars and the Meritorious Commendation for Vietnam War service. Sold for scrapping on December 1, 1975, by the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service
Merchant History. Sold to Max Rouse & Sons, Beverly Hills, CA. on December 4, 1975. Taken in hand by Lake Union Drydock Co., Seattle, WA. and converted for commercial use. Sold to Landing System Technology Pte. Ltd., Singapore (Lauritz Kloster, Norway) and renamed LST 1 in 1976. Arrived at Piraeus having been acquired by Maritime & Commercial Co. Argonaftis S.A., Panama, (Greek flag) and renamed Petrola 141, June 30, 1978 and placed in service in July 1980. Final Disposition, sold for scrapping in 1988.
