Built by American Bridge Company at the Ambridge Manufacturing Plant in Ambridge, PA. Launched February 18, 1944. Commissioned USS LST-656 on April 7, 1944. During World War II USS LST-656 was assigned to the Europe-Africa-Middle East Theater. Participated in the Invasion of Southern France (August 15 to September 22, 1944). USS LST-655 earned one battle star for World War II service. Following World War II USS LST-656 was assigned to Occupation and China service in the Far East for the following periods: September 2, 1945 to May 28, 1946 (Navy Occupation Service Medal) and September 2, 1945 to May 28, 1946 (China Service Medal). Decommissioned on May 29, 1946. Transferred to the State Department for disposition, date unknown. Struck from the Naval Register on July 3, 1946. Final Disposition, fate unknown.
