Built by American Bridge Company at the Ambridge Manufacturing Plant in Ambridge, PA. Launched February 6, 1944. Commissioned USS LST-655 on March 28, 1944. During World War II USS LST-655 was first assigned to the Europe-Africa-Middle East Theater and later to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Participated in two campaigns including the Invasion of Southern France (August 15 to September 22, 1944) and Okinawa Gunto operation (Assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto, June 18 to 30, 1945). USS LST-655 earned two battle stars for World War II service. USS LST-655 transported USS LCT-596 to Okinawa. Following World War II USS LST-655 was assigned to Occupation and China service in the Far East for the following periods: October 1, 1945 to June 1, 1946 (Navy Occupation Service Medal) and October 1, 1945 to May 31, 1946 (China Service Medal). Decommissioned on May 31, 1946. Struck from the Naval Register on July 3, 1946. Transferred to the State Department for disposal, date unknown. Final Disposition, fate unknown.
