LST 281

Built by American Bridge Company at the Ambridge Manufacturing Plant in Ambridge, PA. Launched September 30, 1943. Commissioned USS LST-281 on November 8, 1943. During World War II USS LST-281 was assigned to the Europe-Africa-Middle East Theater. Participated in three campaigns including the Invasion of Normandy (June 6 to 25, 1944), Invasion of Southern France (August 15 to September 25, 1944), and Okinawa Gunto operation (Assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto, June 21 to 30, 1945). USS LST-281 earned three battle stars for World War II service. Following World War II USS LST-281 was assigned to Occupation service in the Far East for the following periods: September 20 to December 20, 1945 and February 5 to 9, 1946. Decommissioned on March 9, 1946. Assigned to Commander Naval Forces Far East (COMNAVFE) Shipping Control Authority for Japan (SCAJAP), May 20, 1949, redesignated Q092. Transferred on March 31, 1952, the Military Sea Transportation Service (MSTS), and placed in service as USNS T-LST-281. Placed out of service and struck from the Naval Register on May 19, 1954. Final Disposition, fate unknown.
