LST 272

Built by American Bridge Company at the Ambridge Manufacturing Plant in Ambridge, PA. Launched August 1, 1943. Commissioned USS LST-272 on September 17, 1943. During World War II USS LST-272 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Participated in five campaigns including Marshall Islands operation (Capture and occupation of Kwajalein and Majuro Atolls, January 31 to February 8, 1944 and Occupation of Eniwetok Atoll, February 17 to March2, 1944), Marianas Islands operation (Capture and occupation of Saipan, June 15 to July 28, 1944), Tinian capture and occupation (July 24 to 28, 1944) Western Caroline Islands operation (capture and occupation of southern Palau Islands, September to October 1944), and Luzon operation (Lingayen Gulf landings, January 9, 1945). USS LST-272 earned five battle stars for World War II service. Dicommissioned on August 16, 1946. Final disposition, sold for scrapping on April 5, 1948 to Bethlehem Steel Co., Bethlehem, PA.
