LST 268

Built by American Bridge Company at the Ambridge Manufacturing Plant in Ambridge, PA. Launched June 18, 1943. Commissioned USS LST-268 on August 19, 1943. During World War II USS LST-268 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Participated in six campaigns including Marshall Islands operation (Capture and occupation of Kwajalein and Majuro Atolls, February 2 to 8, 1944), Marianas Islands operation (Capture and occupation of Saipan, June 15 to 25, 1944), Capture and occupation of Tinian (July 24 to 28, 1944), Western Caroline Islands operation (Capture and occupation of southern Palau Islands, September 9 to October 14, 1944), Luzon operation (Lingayen Gulf landing, January 9, 1945), and Okinawa Gunto operation (Assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto, April 1 to 10, 1945). USS LST-268 earned six battle stars for World War II service. Redesignated Landing Ship Tank (Hospital) LST(H)-268 on September 15, 1945. Following World War II USS LST-268 was assigned to Occupation service in the Far East from October 13, 1945 to February 16, 1946. Dicommissioned on February 16, 1946 and assigned to Commander Naval Forces Far East (COMNAVFE) Shipping Control Authority for Japan (SCAJAP) redesignated Q062. Final disposition, sold for scrapping on March 24, 1948 to Consolidated Shipbuilding Corp., Morris Heights, N.Y.
