Built by American Bridge Company at the Ambridge Manufacturing Plant in Ambridge, PA. Launched January 23, 1943. Commissioned USS LST-261 on May 22, 1943. During World War II USS LST-261 was assigned to the Europe-Africa-Middle East Theater. Participated in the Invasion of Normandy on June 6 through 25, 1944. USS LST-261 earned one battle star for World War II service. Dicommissioned on February 22, 1946. Final disposition, sold for scrapping on November 10, 1947 to Biloxi Boat Wrecking Co.
