LST 1089

Built by American Bridge Company at the Ambridge Manufacturing Plant in Ambridge, PA. Launched February 17, 1945. Commissioned USS LST-1089 on March 28, 1945. During World War II, USS LST-1089 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. USS LST-1089 was assigned to Occupation and China service in the Far East for the following periods: September 21 to October 2, 1945 (Navy Occupation Service Medal); October 27 to Novemebr 5, 1945 (Navy Occupation Service Medal); and April 15 to 17, 1954 (China Service Medal (extended)). Decommissioned on August 16, 1946, at Astoria, OR. Laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Columbia River Group. Recommissioned on September 6, 1950. During the Korean War USS LST-1089 participated in the following campaigns; First UN Counter Offensive (January 25 to April 21, 1951); Communist China Spring Offensive (April 22 to July 8, 1951); Second Korean Winter (November 28, 1951 to April 30, 1952); and Korean Defense Summer-Fall (May 1 to November 30, 1952). USS LST-1089 was assigned to China Service from April 15 to 17, 1954. Named USS Rice County (LST-1089), July 1, 1955. Decommissioned on September 3, 1960. Laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Columbia River Group. Sold to West Germany in October 1960, renamed FGS Bochum (A-1404). Converted to a mine layer redesignated N-120. Struck from the Naval Register, November 1, 1960. USS Rice County as USS LST-1089 earned four battle stars for Korean War service. Sold by Germany to Turkey in 1972, renamed TCG Sancaktar (N-121). Final Disposition, fate unknown.
