LST 1084

Built by American Bridge Company at the Ambridge Manufacturing Plant in Ambridge, PA. Launched January 19, 1945. Commissioned USS LST-1084 on February 19, 1945. During World War II, USS LST-1084 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. USS LST-1084 was assigned to Occupation service in the Far East for the following periods: September 2 to 9, 1945 and October 15, 1951 to February 20, 1952. Decommissioned on August 13, 1946 at Vancouver, WA., and laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Columbia River Group. Recommissioned on November 3, 1950. During the Korean War USS LST-1084 participated in the following campaigns: First UN Counter Offensive (February 11 to March 17, 1951); Communist China Spring Offensive (April 28 to May 1, 1951 and May 9 to 17, 1951); Second Korean Winter (April 20 to 30, 1952); and Korean Defense Summer-Fall 1952 (May 1 to 3, and May 17 to 30, 1952; August 13, 1952; August 24 to September 16, 1952; and October 18, 1952. Named USS Polk County (LST-1084) on July 1, 1955. During the Vietnam War USS Polk County (LST-1084) participated in the following campaigns: Vietnamese Counteroffensive (January 9 to February 22, 1966 and March 20 to 26, 1966); Vietnamese Counteroffensive – Phase III (July 23 to August 23, 1967); Vietnamese Counteroffensive – Phase VI (December 18, 1968 to January 2, 1969 and January 18 to February 22, 1969); and Tet/69 Counteroffensive (February 23 to March 15, 1969 and March 23 to April 8, 1969). Decommissioned on October 30, 1969, at San Diego CA. Laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, San Diego Group. Struck From the Naval Register, September 15, 1974. USS Polk County (LST-1084) earned four battle stars for the Korean War and four campaign stars for Vietnam War service. Final Disposition, sold, December 1, 1975, for scrapping by (DRMS) Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service.
