LST 1083

Built by American Bridge Company at the Ambridge Manufacturing Plant in Ambridge, PA. Launched January 14, 1945. Commissioned USS LST-1083 on February 13, 1945. During World War II, USS LST-1083 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Participated in the Okinawa Gunto operation (Assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto, June 8 to 30, 1945). Following World War II USS LST-1083 was assigned to Occupation service in the Far East for the following periods: September 2 to 11, 1945 and October 8 to November 1, 1945. Decommissioned on August 1, 1946. Laid up in Pacific Reserve Fleet. Recommissioned on September 8, 1950. During The Korean War USS LST-1083 participated in the following campaigns: First UN Counter Offensive (February 3 to March 17, 1951); Communist China Spring Offensive (April 24 to 30, 1951 and May 6 to 18, 1951); and Korean Defense Summer-Fall 1952 (May 20 to 21, 1952; June 18 to July 7, 1952; August 9 to 31, 1952; and October 14 to November 1, 1952). Named USS Plumas County (LST-1083), July 1, 1955. Decommissioned on August 22, 1961, at Sasebo, Japan. Laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, at Sasebo. Placed in service by the Military Sea Transportation Service (MSTS) as USNS Plumas County (T-LST-1083) in December 1965. Placed out of service, date unknown. Struck from the Naval Register on June 1, 1972. USS LST-1083 earned one battle star for World War II service and three battle stars for the Korean War service. Final Disposition, sold by the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service for scrapping, May 1, 1973.
