Liberty University Vehicular Tunnel

Completed in 2014 by Southland Contracting, the Liberty University Vehicular Tunnel Project consisted of the construction of a twin-tube box tunnel system to pass under the existing set of Norfolk Southern rail lines located to the east of the intersection of Harvard Street and Wards Road in Lynchburg, Virginia. The major construction elements of the project include 130 foot long, twin concrete, jacked box tunnels; and a (170 foot long) portion of the adjacent 36-inch diameter storm drain conveyance. The concrete box tunnels will each have an interior dimension of 28 foot wide by 16 foot high, and reinforced concrete wall thickness of 2 to 2.5 foot thick.
