Completed in 2005 by Mole Constructors, the Lee Road Superior Road Intercommunity Relief Sewer Contract 1 project consisted of the excavation of approximately 22,593 linear feet of 7 to 8 ft 9-inch diameter tunnel and 10,839 linear feet of 7 ft diameter tunnel for a sanitary sewer through shale including shaft excavations to depths of 270 vertical feet. Tunnel excavation performed via a 105-inch diameter Lovat Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) for the larger tunnel, and a 83-inch diameter Lovat TBM for the smaller tunnel. The initial tunnel support consisted of rock dowels with welded wire fabric or steel ribs and wood lagging. The final lining consists of 72-inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe for the larger tunnel and 42-inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe for the smaller tunnel. The shafts were supported via liner plates within soft ground, and rock dowels, welded wire fabric and shotcrete within rock. Tangential approach flow, baffle-type flow and standard drop structures were constructed within the shafts.
