HX Drawbridge Emergency Repairs – Fab

Completed in 2005 by American Bridge, the HX Drawbridge Emergency Repairs – Fab project consisted of addressing the second incident within a year where this swingspan bridge over the Harlem River was hit by a barge, this time while in the open position. From February 8 through 10, American Bridge forces installed temporary tie rods and weldments, and removed the western main drive pinion and shaft to allow the bridge to re-open. The bridge was jacked vertically using eight 300-ton jacks and horizontally using two 100-ton jacks, to allow resetting on the roller rim plate. From April 16 through May 9, American Bridge installed a new drive shaft and replaced 25′ of the truss bottom chord, plus 8′ of a diagonal. Shaft alignment was adjusted and verified.
