Completed in 1935 by American Bridge, the Huey P. Long Bridge project consisted of the fabrication and erection of a 1,850’ cantilevered truss over the Mississippi River. The three-span cantilever unit includes two 529’ anchor arms and a 790’ main span made up of two 145’ cantilever arms and a 500’ suspended span. It was built using the balanced cantilever method, progressing in both directions from each pier. Additionally, a 528’ simple through truss span was constructed on the New Orleans side of the cantilever unit using a temporary tie for cantilevered erection.
