Hanlan Feedermain and Mississauga City Centre Watermain (Contract 3)

Completed in 2019 by Southland Contracting, the Hanlan Feedermain and Mississauga City Centre Watermain (Contract 3) Project consisted of the installation of 8-foot diameter pipes to carry water from the Lakeview Water Treatment Plant to the Hanlan Reservoir and Pumping Station. The Mississauga City Centre Watermain involved the installation of 5-foot diameter pipes to convey water from the Hanlan Reservoir and Pumping Station to the intersection of Cawthra and Burnham Thorpe Roads within the Mississauga City Centre. Southland was the prime contractor for the third contract, which included both tunneling and open cut activities on Eastgate Parkway, Tomken Road, and Cawthra Road. To avoid negative impacts on the local community in this densely populated urban and industrial area, Southland redesigned the project to remove some of the open cut trenches and replace it with pipe in tunnel. The value engineering redesign was approved with no additional time or cost. The success of this redesign was largely due to open communication and close collaboration between the owner and the contractor.
