Completed in 1990 by American Bridge, the George Washington Bridge Major Repairs project consisted of American Bridge serving as the lead and prime contractor responsible for overall management of the repairs to this iconic 3,500-foot (main span) bridge in New York City, conducted from 1986 to 1990. The work included extensive structural repairs to the approaches and suspended span, such as stringers, floor beams, stiffening trusses, and walkways. Additionally, the project involved replacing bearings, expansion dams, mechanical and electrical systems, as well as painting the structure. A key part of the project was the $3.6 million work item, where the three existing maintenance travelers (each 100′ by 8′) were removed, rehabilitated, and had their electrical and mechanical systems completely overhauled. This comprehensive repair effort ensured the continued safety and functionality of the George Washington Bridge, one of New York City’s most vital transportation links.
