Completed in 1952 by American Bridge, the George P. Coleman Bridge project consisted of fabricating and erecting twin 500′ swing spans as part of a 2,540′ crossing, making it one of the largest movable bridges in the world. The bridge spans the York River in Virginia, providing a crucial connection for both vehicular traffic and maritime vessels. The twin swing spans were designed to allow for the passage of large ships, with the ability to rotate open to accommodate vessel traffic. The project highlighted advanced engineering and precision in the construction of such a significant and complex structure.
