Completed in 1983 by Mole Constructors, the Eastgate Trunk Improvements project involved approximately 1,800 linear feet of tunneling, employing a 76-inch Scott Tunnel Boring Machine. The tunnel was supported by an R&B (rock and bolt) primary liner with a 36-inch RCP (reinforced concrete pipe) secondary liner. The tunneling occurred through methanol-laden clays and utilized cellular concrete annulus backfill grouting.
