Completed in 1983 by American Bridge, the DM&IR Ore Dock No. 6 Reconstruction project consisted of reconstructing a major ore dock originally built in 1919 and modified in 1964-1965. The 1964-1965 modifications included a 2.5 million ton storage area and a conveyor system for year-round taconite production. The 1981-1983 reconstruction dredged a berth for 1,000′ long, 60,000 ton capacity ore boats, and added a shiploader with 20 retractable shuttle conveyors designed by American Bridge. Each conveyor has a capacity of 1,350 tons per hour, making it the largest ore loading dock in the world.
