Completed in 2012, the Chincoteague Bridge RT 175 project involved constructing a 4,764’ replacement bridge for Virginia Route 175, including a 4,035’ mainline and a 729’ connector to Marsh Island. The two-lane bridge features 80’ precast concrete girder spans on cast-in-place cylinder piles. The project included a 92’ single-leaf trunnion bascule span with 123’-6” girders and 417,460 lbs of structural steel. A total of 292 concrete cylinder piles were driven, some reaching -129’ using a 30’ follower. The contract also included demolishing the existing bridge.
