Completed in 1973 by American Bridge, the Chesapeake Bay (William Preston Lane) Bridge II project consisted of constructing the superstructure for a 32-span, 14,500′ bay crossing, including a 2,950′ suspension bridge with a 1,600′ main span. American Bridge fabricated and erected all structural steel, manufactured the PPWS strands, and served as general contractor. The bridge features steel towers, a deck truss supported by 61 PPWS cables, and a 6.5″ concrete roadway on a metal deck. It also includes a 1,719′ cantilever truss span with a 780′ main span.
