Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel

Completed in 1963 by American Bridge, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel project consisted of fabricating nineteen 286.5-foot double-skinned tunnel sections, which were towed to Chesapeake Bay, fitted with roadways, pipelines, and communication equipment, then lowered into underwater trenches. These sections formed part of the 5,738-foot tunnel unit of the 17.5-mile bridge-tunnel from Cape Henry to Cape Charles, Virginia.
