Completed in 1992 by American Bridge, the Carter Avenue Vertical Lift Bridge Rehabilitation involved raising and locking the bridge in the up position due to cracks in the counterweight sheave trunnion shafts. The project included structural rehab of the towers and approaches, replacing the roadway grid, 400-ton counterweight boxes, operating machinery, ropes, and the lift span truss. American Bridge lowered the 800-ton truss using hoists, barges, and cranes, then dismantled and scrapped it. The new truss was assembled on barges, and additional work included cleaning, painting, electrical upgrades, a new north abutment, and architectural rehabilitation.
